Jaisalmer: a city with a long history
For almost 3000 years, the Silk Road was an important trade route between China, India Tibet, the Persian Empire and the Mediterranean countries. Extending 4,000 miles (6,500 km), the route enabled traders to transport fine fabrics, spices, tea, perfumes, jewels and other luxury products, as well as serving as a conduit for the spread of knowledge, ideas and culture.
Jaisalmer owes much of its historic importance to its crucial role as the gateway between India and the Occident. Former capital of the princely state of Jaisalmer and home to the Bhati clan of Rajput warriors, it used to be the gathering point for caravans crossing the Thar desert. With its honey-coloured buildings and its renowned wealth, it was appropriately nicknamed “the Golden City”. Nowadays, Jaisalmer remains an essential destination for travellers seeking an unforgettable cultural experience.

Golden Fort
Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest forts in the world. It was built in 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal. The fort stands proudly amidst the great Thar Desert and has been the scene of many battles. It harbors a beautiful palace and various Jain temples.
| Havelis
The Havelis have been built with the wealth accumulated from banking, finance, silver, brocade and opium trade. Patwon Haveli is the largest and most decorated, but a visit to Salam Singh Haveli will make you understand more about their architecture, while Nathmal Haveli has a splendid façade.
| Jain Temples
Jaisalmer has been enriched by its Jain community, which has adorned the city with beautiful temples, notably the temples dedicated to the 16th and 23rd Tirthankaras: Shantinath and Parshva. Jaisalmer boasts some of the oldest libraries of India which contain rarest manuscripts.
| Bada Bagh
A maharaja of Jaisalamer, Jai Singh II, created a water tank during his reign in the 16th century, making the desert green in this area. After his death, his son Lunkaran built a beautiful garden next to the lake and a chhatri (cenotaph) for his father. Later on, other chhatri were constructed. Today it is a lovely destination for watching the sun set over the Thar.
| Thar Desert
With an area of more than 200,000 km2 (77,000 sq mi),it is the world's 9th largest subtropical desert. It is a great place to observe natural biodiversity, as you can spot many animal species: the Indian gazelle, more than 140 species of migratory and resident birds such as eagles and falcons, and various lizards and snakes. And of course, it is a good spot for camel rides and safaris.
